The right size rug is the difference between a room that feels finished and one that feels like it's still waiting on something.
Guessing dimensions from a product photo is the easiest way to end up disappointed when the box arrives. Here's a room-by-room breakdown of what actually works, starting with the numbers and ending with the details that make a rug feel chosen rather than just ordered.
Rug Sizes at a Glance
| Room | Typical Size | Placement Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom (Twin/Full) | 5' x 7" or 6' x 9' | Centred under the bed, visible on both sides |
| Bedroom (Queen/King) | 8' x 10" to 9' x 12' | Extend 24–30" beyond the sides and foot |
| Living Room (small) | 5' x 8' | Front legs of each piece resting on the rug |
| Living Room (standard/large) | 8' x 10" to 10' x 14' | All furniture legs on the rug for a grounded look |
| Dining Room | Table length + 5' | 24–30" clearance beyond the table on every side |
| Kitchen | Runner, 2'–3' wide | Placed in front of the sink and stove |
| Hallway | Runner, hall width minus 4–6" | Leave a few inches of floor visible on each side |
| Home Office | 4' x 6' or 5' x 7' | Wide enough for the chair to roll freely |
Bedroom
The bed decides the rug, not the other way around. The general rule is simple: the rug should be visible on at least two sides of the bed, ideally three, so it reads as a deliberate piece of the room rather than a mat that got left underneath it.
A rug that's too small will look like an afterthought squeezed under the frame. When in doubt between two sizes, go up rather than down; a slightly oversized bedroom rug almost always looks better than a slightly undersized one.
A 5' x 7' or 6' x 9' rug centred under the bed works well, with enough showing on each side to frame the frame. A runner along one side is also a good option if space is tight.
Aim for 8' x 10' up to 9' x 12', with the rug extending 24–30" beyond the sides and foot of the bed. Nightstands can sit on the rug or just off it, whichever the room's proportions call for.
Living Room
Living rooms are the most forgiving room to size for, and the easiest to get wrong anyway, because so much depends on how the furniture is arranged. As a starting point: a small living room or apartment usually calls for something around 5' x 8', a standard living room sits comfortably at 8' x 10', and a large or open-plan space often needs 9' x 12' or up, sometimes layered as two rugs instead of one.
Beyond the raw measurement, the placement of the furniture on the rug matters just as much as the size itself.
Every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug. This is the more grounded, formal look, and it's usually the right call for a larger room where a smaller rug would float in the middle of the floor.
Only the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug, back legs on the bare floor. This works well in a mid-size room and lets a smaller, more expressive rug still anchor the space.
Dining Room
The dining room has the least room for error of any space in the house, because a rug that's even a little too small shows up the moment someone pulls out a chair. The rule here is a firm one: leave 24–30" of rug beyond every edge of the table, so all four chair legs stay on the rug even when pulled fully back.
Shape should follow the table: a rectangular table calls for a rectangular rug, a round table for a round or square one. Skip a high, plush pile here if you can, a flatter weave keeps chairs sliding smoothly instead of catching.
Kitchen
Runners over full rugs, placed in front of the sink and stove, the two spots where you actually stand still.
2'–3' wide is standard, long enough to cover the working stretch of counter without crowding cabinet doors.
Material matters as much as size here. A low-pile, washable weave like a Boucherouite holds up far better against spills than a plush shag.
Leave walkways clear. A rug that narrows a busy path between counter and table causes more trip hazards than it solves comfort problems.
Hallway & Entryway
Leave 4–6" of floor visible on each side of the runner, so the hallway still reads as a hallway rather than a corridor of rug.
Stop 6–10" short of each end wall or doorway, rather than running the runner edge to edge.
Use a non-slip pad underneath, hallways see more foot traffic than almost any other room in the house.
Home Office
An office rug has one job a living room rug doesn't: it needs to let a desk chair roll freely without sliding off the edge or catching on the transition to bare floor. Measure the distance the chair travels when you roll back from the desk, then add another 20–24" of rug in that direction.
Most home offices don't need much more than a 4' x 6' or 5' x 7' piece. A smaller, well-chosen rug does more for a room this size than a large one ever would.
General Rules for Getting It Right
Tape out the exact dimensions on the floor with painter's tape or newspaper before buying anything. It takes ten minutes and prevents almost every sizing mistake on this page.
A rug that's slightly too large can still ground a room. A rug that's slightly too small just looks like a mistake, no matter how good the pattern is.
One more habit worth building in: leave a consistent border of bare floor between the rug and the wall, generally 8–12" in a smaller room and a bit more in a larger one. It's a small detail, but it's the difference between a rug that looks placed and one that looks like it's still finding its spot.
Rug Sizing, In Short
Bedroom: visible on at least two sides of the bed, three if you can manage it.
Living room: either all four legs on the rug, or front legs only, never neither.
Dining room: 24–30" of clearance beyond the table on every side.
Kitchen & hallway: a durable runner in the right spot beats a large rug in the wrong one.
Home office: size for the chair's full range of movement, not just the desk.
Always tape it out first, and size up rather than down when you're stuck between two options.
