How to Layer Rugs Boho Style: The Ultimate Guide

How to Layer Rugs Boho Style: The Ultimate Guide - Benisouk
Styling Guide

Layering rugs is the fastest way to build depth into a room — texture on texture, one base rug at a time.

A single large rug grounds a space. Add a second one over it, and that same floor becomes a focal point without redecorating anything else. It's also the most forgiving way to use a rug you love but weren't sure how to place on its own, a small vintage find, a hide, a shag too bold to stand alone. Here's how to layer them properly, boho-style.

Before You Start Layering

A little prep now saves a lot of re-adjusting later. Before either rug touches the floor:

Measure the room, including doorways and furniture, so both rugs actually fit the footprint you have in mind.

Pick rugs with something in common, a color, a fiber, an undertone, so the pairing reads as intentional rather than accidental.

Clean and vacuum the floor first. Dust trapped under two layers is far harder to get out later.

Check the floor for unevenness. A subfloor issue will telegraph straight through the pile.

Sketch the layout before you commit, sizes, shapes, and how much of the base rug you want left showing.

Choosing Two Rugs That Work Together

Large, neutral, and usually flatwoven, a jute or plain wool piece that anchors the furniture and does the quiet work. Choose it by season as much as by color: something breathable for warmer months, wool or shag once the weather turns.

Smaller and more expressive, a hide, a vintage Moroccan piece, or a boldly patterned rug that plays its shape against the base rug's geometry. This is where the eclectic, boho character actually happens.

In a smaller room, keep both rugs close in color and let texture carry the contrast instead, a plush wool top layer over a flat, tightly woven base reads calm rather than busy. If the room already feels neutral, a boldly patterned top rug is the fastest way to add life without touching anything else in the space.

Alignment and Angles

The base rug is generally placed straight, in line with the furniture, so it grounds the room rather than competing with it. The top rug can be angled anywhere from 45 to 90 degrees for a more considered, lived-in look. Angling a rug draws the eye, so it's an easy way to make a statement, just don't angle more than one layer at a time, or the room starts to feel unsettled instead of curated.

Layering for a Maximalist Look

Boho and maximalism share a logic: more isn't the goal, curation is. If you're layering three or four rugs with different patterns, textures, and colors, the trick is finding harmony rather than piling things on. A well-chosen mix of tones and origins will read as depth. A random mix will just read as clutter.

The most convincing maximalist rooms mix fresh color with traditional motifs, a modern rug over a heritage piece, or a bright accent color against a muted, worn base. Give each rug a distinct job, ground, contrast, or accent, rather than letting them all compete for the same one.

Common Layering Problems, Solved

What works
  • A non-slip rug pad under every layer, not just the base
  • Overlapping by about a third rather than centering the top rug flush
  • Varying rug shapes and sizes so the edges don't compete for the same line
What to avoid
  • Rugs sliding or bunching underfoot in high-traffic rooms
  • Stacking too many thick piles, which creates a trip hazard, not texture
  • Two rugs of the same size and shape, which reads flat instead of layered

Layering in Small Spaces

Layering still works in a small room, it just asks for restraint. Start with a smaller top rug so it doesn't crowd out the floor you're trying to open up. A monochromatic scheme with varied texture, a jute base under a sisal or wool accent, keeps the look elegant rather than busy, and lets the layering itself do the visual work instead of pattern or color.

Texture, Focal Points, and Room by Room

Texture is what makes a layered look feel intentional. Pair a soft shag with a sturdy sisal, or a plush wool rug with a smooth cowhide, and the contrast alone creates depth, no extra pattern needed. A boldly patterned top rug, meanwhile, naturally becomes the room's focal point; vary its size and shape against the base rug so the eye has somewhere to land.

The same principle adapts room to room: in a dining space, a large base rug with a smaller layer under the table adds definition and protection; in a living room, pairing a vintage piece with something more modern is the classic boho combination; in a bedroom, a sheepskin layered on top is usually all it takes for a softer, cozier feel underfoot.

The Boho-Chic Checklist

Mix eras and origins. Pair a vintage rug with something modern rather than matching two of the same style.

Let one rug be the statement and treat every other layer as support for it.

Balance every bold pattern with a neutral nearby, whether that's another rug, the furniture, or the wall behind it.

Play with angles rather than squaring every edge to the room.

Finish with soft, decorative ties, macrame, throw pillows, aged wood, that pull the layered rugs into the rest of the room.
