How to Care for a Vintage Moroccan Rug

How to Care for a Vintage Moroccan Rug - Benisouk
Care Guide

A vintage Moroccan rug has already survived decades before it reached your floor, treat it with a little more care than something machine-made, and it will outlast you too.

A striking vintage piece can bring an entire room together, colour, texture, and depth in one place, without asking you to compromise on how it's cared for. A few clear habits are all it takes to keep it in shape.

What Makes a Vintage Rug Different

A vintage rug is an investment in a piece of art as much as a floor covering. It was carefully, meticulously hand-woven, often before mass production of any kind existed, and it has already stood up to decades of wear. That history comes from organic material, most likely pure sheep's wool, with no synthetic fibre or chemical dye involved. The same durability that's kept it going this long also means its fibres are more delicate than a machine-made rug's, and worth handling with a bit more care.

Vacuuming and Professional Cleaning

Weekly, at home

Vacuum gently once a week, or use a soft brush, and flip the rug to clean the underside too, where most of the dust actually collects.

Every few years, professionally

Leave a deep clean to a professional experienced specifically with vintage pieces. Hand-washing it yourself risks damaging it beyond repair.

Airing Out and Refreshing

Air the rug outside roughly once a month, on a dry, sunny day, to let it breathe. If it needs a bit more refreshing, sprinkle baking soda over both sides, leave it outdoors for a while, then shake the rug out gently to remove the residue.

Rotate to Even Out Wear

Turning the rug periodically keeps the sun from fading the same spot every time and gives high-traffic areas a break from constant foot traffic. It doubles as an easy way to refresh a room, shifting a vintage piece to a new spot changes the whole feel of a space without buying anything new.

Treat Spills Gently

Scrubbing a spill only pushes it deeper into the fibres, so blot it with a towel instead, adding water sparingly to avoid saturating the rug. Speed matters here more than technique: the longer a stain sits, the further it penetrates. Wool also works in your favour, its natural lanolin acts as a mild stain repellent, giving a vintage wool rug better odds against a spill than most factory-made alternatives.

Vintage Rug Care, In Short

Vacuum gently once a week, both sides, rather than deep-cleaning it yourself.

Book a professional every few years, someone experienced specifically with vintage pieces.

Air it out monthly on a dry, sunny day to keep it fresh.

Rotate it regularly to even out sun fade and foot traffic.

Blot spills right away, never scrub, and use water sparingly.
