What is Moroccan Azilal carpet?

Azilal rugs are named after the mountainous region where they are made, about 180km from Marrakech. It is in everyday life that the tribal women of this region give life to their ancestral traditions by weaving this Berber rug. This rug’s reputation has gone beyond this steep region of the Moroccan High Atlas and has become a popular alternative to the more well-known Beni Ourain rugs. Azilal rugs are strongly associated with the use of aboriginal patterns and colour palettes.

How was the Moroccan Azilal rug created?

Moroccan Azilal rugs combines the bright colours of Boucherouite rug and the graphic patterns of Beni Ourain rug. The weaving techniques are a little different from those used to craft the Beni Ourain rug. The weaver must first work the virgin wool to alternately perform a knotted line and one or two braided lines. This makes a shorter velvet like rug that invites to people to lay down to read for hours on its’ soft and comfortable fibres.

Azilal rugs are embellished with several colours, introduced with either tinted wool or coloured cotton threads. The bottom of a rug is often white or cream in reference to the natural colour of the wool, this natural hue gives authenticity to this jewel of Moroccan craftsmanship. The meaning of the patterns that adorn the rug may represent the femininity of Berber women and the history of the tribe and its tradition.
