The Wool Profile

To Benisouk, wool is a living archive. We curate heritage Siroua and Marmoucha fibers from the Atlas peaks, blending them with high-altitude New Zealand Merino for its low-micron fineness.

By hand-processing our wool to preserve its organic lanolin, we create an architectural density that evolves, maturing into a softer, more luminous patina over decades.

The Merino | “The White Gold”

Origin: New Zealand

Sourced from high-altitude regions (~2,000m), this fiber is naturally selected for resilience and long-lasting loft.

Luminous Clarity: Naturally bright fibers help dyes read cleanly and stay luminous over time.

Micron Fineness: Typically within a 12–22 micron selection (may vary slightly by batch), ensuring a virtually itch-free experience designed to feel soft against the skin.

Structural Memory: Natural crimp supports quick rebound and helps the pile keep its shape.

Atmospheric Performance: Naturally hygroscopic properties regulate indoor humidity and maintain fiber freshness.

The Benisouk Application: We blend this Pacific fiber with our Moroccan yarns to give the Mrirt Collection its signature architectural weight and cashmere-level finish.

The Siroua | “The Mountain Silk”

The Origin: High Atlas

Sourced from high Atlas regions, this fiber is valued for luster and the ability to hold intricate detailing.

Mountain Silk: Known for a silky luster that enhances the depth and dimension of dyes.

Long-Staple Integrity: Exceptional fiber length ensures a supple, high-tensile weave, enabling the complex fine-line detailing of our Taznakht rugs.

Lanolin Saturation: Natural oils can help repel light spills and keep dust closer to the surface for easier upkeep.

Living Patina: These fibers retain their organic moisture, becoming softer and more luminous with decades of use rather than drying out.

The Benisouk Application: We reserve Siroua wool for our Taznakht and fine-woven collections to ensure archival color saturation and superior structural resilience.

The Marmoucha | “The Atlas Cloud”

The Origin: Middle Atlas

Native to snow-capped plateaus, the Marmoucha breed produces one of Morocco’s most resilient fibers, prized for volume and spring.

Structural Crimp: A natural zig-zag structure provides a mechanical spring, ensuring the pile maintains its volume under foot traffic and furniture weight.

Unprocessed Ivory Tone: Naturally clear and bright, this wool requires no chemical bleaching, preserving the fiber’s organic scales and inherent strength.

Thermal Density: Voluminous, long-staple fibers provide superior insulation and sound absorption through a dense, cushioned pile.

High-Pile Resilience: The fiber’s inherent "bounce" prevents matting, maintaining the authentic shaggy texture essential for traditional high-pile weaves.

The Benisouk Application: We utilize Marmoucha wool exclusively for our Beni Ourain collection to ensure the long pile remains upright and soft, resisting compaction over time.

Softness Underfoot

No ‘Itch.’ Designed for barefoot living, our ultra-fine fibers are selected to feel soft and comfortable against the skin.

Structural Resilience

Biological Memory. High-crimp fibers act as a natural spring, recovering volume quickly.

Effortless Care

Natural Barrier. Saturated lanolin acts as a sealant, often helping spills bead on the surface when addressed promptly.

Aging with Grace

Heirloom Quality. While synthetics fray, our wool matures, developing a luminous patina.

What We Reject

At Benisouk, luxury is a standard of exclusion. We define the quality of our wool by the industrial processes we refuse to follow.

The Rejection of “Dead Wool”: Industrial rugs often utilize fibers chemically stripped from hides in tanneries. This "Dead Wool" has a destroyed cuticle, leading to a brittle texture and permanent, aggressive shedding. We source exclusively Living Wool, shorn from live sheep. By preserving the fiber's cuticle and internal lanolin, we ensure a rug that is naturally stain-resistant and remains supple for a lifetime.

The Rejection of Acid Scouring: Mass production relies on high-heat sulfuric acid scouring to remove debris, a process that "scorches" the wool and kills its natural luster. We cleanse our wool in pH-neutral mountain spring water using organic soaps. This manual, heritage process protects the fiber’s "Mountain Silk" sheen and ensures its long-term structural integrity.

The Result: A rug that doesn't just look luxury, it performs. By protecting the biology of the wool, we deliver a product that matures and softens over decades rather than thinning out.

"Whether woven today in the peaks of the Atlas or preserved from decades past, the soul of the wool remains the same."

Vintage Sourcing

Benisouk vintage rugs are curated heritage archives, each reflecting the regional wool characteristics of its specific era and origin. Rather than standardized sourcing, we prioritize fiber integrity and the “living patina”, a natural luster and softness developed over decades of use.

Every piece is hand-selected as a resilient, pre-industrial artifact, vetted to ensure the wool remains as structurally sound as the day it was woven.

Maintenance & Care
Does the wool shed?

Initial shedding is a natural phase of high-density, hand-woven wool. This "settling" typically lasts 2–4 months and is a sign of a high fiber-count weave. Regular vacuuming on a suction-only setting will resolve this as the fibers seat into the foundation.

How do I clean my rug?

High-altitude wool is naturally rich in lanolin, which acts as a biological sealant. Most dirt sits on the surface and can be removed with gentle vacuuming. For spills, blot immediately with lukewarm water; the wool’s hydrophobic properties prevent immediate absorption.

Will it stain?

Because our fibers are not stripped of their organic oils, they possess an inherent resistance to liquids. If addressed promptly, most spills will bead on the surface rather than penetrating the core of the fiber.

Comfort & Safety
Is the wool itchy?

No. By typically selecting fibers within a 12–22 micron range (varying slightly by batch), our wool is fine enough to bend upon contact with the skin rather than prickle it. This ensures a virtually itch-free experience that feels more like a premium knit than a traditional rug.

Is it safe for families?

Our rugs are 100% wool, cleaned with pH-neutral organic soaps and free from the synthetic glues and VOCs found in industrial alternatives.
The wool is naturally flame-retardant, generally well-tolerated, and serves as a safer alternative to many synthetic, glue-backed rugs for children and pets.

Does it have a natural scent?

As a "Living Wool" product, a new rug may carry a faint, earthy aroma of the Atlas mountains. This is a hallmark of wool that has not been stripped by harsh chemicals. This scent is non-toxic and dissipates completely within a few days of being unrolled.

The Investment
Why is Benisouk priced higher than mass-market alternatives?

The difference is found in "Architectural Density." A Benisouk rug utilizes up to 50% more wool by weight and involves months of manual labor. While industrial rugs degrade, high-altitude wool matures, becoming softer and more valuable over decades of use.

Is your wool sustainably sourced?

Sustainability is inherent to our process. Our wool is a 100% renewable resource, shorn seasonally from free-roaming sheep in a carbon-neutral cycle. Because the fibers are entirely organic, they are fully biodegradable, ensuring no lasting footprint on the environment.

Will the colors fade?

Our dyeing approach is designed for lasting depth and vibrancy, even in bright rooms (with standard sun-care).
