5 Fabulous Ideas to Clean Your Sabra Cushions and/or Carpet

5 Fabulous Ideas to Clean Your Sabra Cushions and/or Carpet - Benisouk
Care Guide

A handmade Moroccan rug is built to outlast you, but only if it's cleaned the way it was made: carefully, and by hand.

Whether it's an original Benisouk Sabra with intricate geometric pattern or a classic piece in sleek neutral tone, the same handful of habits will keep it looking new for decades. Here's how to care for it properly.

When to Clean Your Rug

There's no fixed schedule for cleaning a Moroccan rug, but a monthly glance is a good habit. If the pile has lost its lustre or dust has visibly settled into the pattern, it's time.

Clearing Everyday Dust and Dirt

The traditional method

Hang the rug outdoors, on a wall or a line, and beat the dust out with a brush, a technique Moroccan households have relied on for centuries. Just watch the weather.

The modern method

Vacuum on a gentle setting to avoid damaging delicate fibres, flipping the rug to clean the back as well. A soft brush works just as well by hand for anything more delicate.

Spot Cleaning Without Damage

Blot spills immediately with a towel rather than rubbing them into the pile.

Spot test first, cool water with a touch of mild detergent or diluted white vinegar, on a hidden area, to be sure the colours don't bleed.

Check for natural dye by pressing a damp white cloth against an inconspicuous spot, colour transfer means it isn't naturally dyed.

For a full hand-clean, use a soft brush with diluted water and dish soap, then dry the rug fully in the sun.

Air It Out

Airing a rug outdoors every so often keeps it from turning musty and clears any lingering odour, a natural fix with no products required. The trick is balance: too many hours in direct sun will fade the fibres over time, so aim for a stretch that mixes daytime warmth with the cooler evening air rather than leaving it out all day.

Built to Outlast You

A genuine handmade Moroccan rug, properly cared for, can last for generations. The simplest way to protect one is to keep dust and dirt from building up in the first place, and to keep it out of the highest-traffic path in the room where possible. Beyond that, a professional clean once a year is worth it, so long as the cleaner has real experience with handmade rugs. Standard dry cleaning tends to rely on harsh chemicals that a delicate, handwoven piece doesn't need.

Rotate With the Seasons

Move it in wet seasons

Relocate the rug away from muddy entryways or high-traffic paths during fall and winter, so it stays the centrepiece without taking the brunt of foot traffic.

Watch the sun exposure

Months of direct sunlight will eventually fade a rug, a welcome look on a vintage piece, less so on one you want to keep vibrant. Place it out of strong sun if colour retention matters to you.

Moroccan Rug Care, In Short

Check monthly for lost lustre, that's your cue to clean.

Beat, brush, or vacuum out dust regularly to keep dirt from settling in.

Spot test before treating any stain, and blot rather than rub.

Air it out in the sun occasionally, without overdoing direct exposure.

Have it professionally cleaned once a year, by someone experienced with handmade rugs.

Rotate or relocate it seasonally to spread out wear and sun exposure evenly.
