From the room

4.8 average · 716 reviews

“Flat, crisp, and it hides nothing, which is the point. A year in our hallway and not a single crease.”

L. K., Brooklyn · Sirwa, 8′ × 10′

“We flipped it after the summer for the other face. Same rug, different room.”

A. D., Copenhagen · Assif, custom 7′ × 11′

“The swatch decided it. The saffron reads warmer in our light than on screen, and warmer was right.”

M. R., London · Tifawin, 6′ × 9′

“We sized it to the room instead of the room to a rug. Twelve weeks, and it fits like the floor was measured for it.”

S. K., Sydney · custom 9′ × 12′

The wool

High-density flatweaving meets ancient tribal geometry, hand-spun wool knotted with tight, precise tension.Structure and warmth, refined on the loom.

Good to know

Flat or low pile, which for my room?

Flat where things move: halls, kitchens, under a dining table, or layered over another rug. Chairs slide, doors clear it, and there is no pile to crush. Low pile where you want a little warmth and depth underfoot without the height of a shag, and where you want the pattern to stand off the ground. Both are 0.4″ to 0.8″, both wear for decades. Flat can be woven to your size or bought in stock; low pile is only ever in stock.

Do I need a rug pad?

A pad matters most under the flat weave, with no pile to grip the floor, it keeps the rug from sliding, cushions the step, and holds it flat where you set it. Worth it under a low pile too, on any hard floor.

What if the swatch isn't right?

The $20 is credited whether or not you go ahead, and nothing is woven until you've approved the wool in your hands. The swatch is there to make the decision for you.

Can I return it?

Anything woven to your size isn't returnable, which is exactly why the swatch comes first. Anything already in stock, a low pile, or a flat weave in the size it was made, follows our standard fourteen-day returns, live with it before you decide.

About Taznakht

Taznakht is a place before it is a rug, a weaving region of the southern High Atlas, and the weavers there work two looms. On the flat loom the wool is laid down pick by pick with no pile: bands, diamonds, clean geometry, the pattern is the structure itself, and it reads the same on both faces. On the knotting loom the same fleece is tied into a short, dense pile, closer to 0.8″ than to a shag, and the pattern stands off the ground rather than lying in it. Commissions are always flat: woven to your exact size, at one rate per square foot, with a $20 wool swatch, credited to your rug, approved before the loom starts. Count ten to twelve weeks. Some flat weaves are already finished and held in stock, in the size they were made. The low-pile pieces are never made to order, they arrive from Taznakht complete, each one the only one, sometimes decades old and sometimes woven last season, priced whole and ready to ship within the week. High Atlas wool is hand-spun and dyed in small lots or left in its natural fleece, so tones shift slightly batch to batch. Wherever you are, New York, London, Sydney or Copenhagen, your Benisouk ships insured and all-in, duties included, from the High Atlas to your door.
