How it's made

1. Design Concept
  • Inspiration: Artisans draw inspiration from Islamic art, geometric patterns, and nature.
  • Sketching: Initial designs are sketched, often featuring intricate motifs and patterns.
2. Material Selection
  • Brass Sourcing: High-quality brass sheets are sourced. Brass is preferred for its durability and aesthetic appeal.
  • Other Materials: Sometimes, artisans also use glass, wood, or colored materials for added decoration.
3. Cutting the Brass
  • Measuring: Precise measurements are taken based on the design.
  • Cutting: Brass sheets are cut into the desired shapes using tools like saws or shears. Artisans may use a template for accuracy.
4. Engraving and Etching
  • Pattern Transfer: Designs are transferred onto the brass surface, often using carbon paper or stencils.
  • Engraving: Skilled artisans hand-engrave or use specialized tools to etch intricate designs into the brass. This step requires precision and artistic skill.
5. Shaping the Fixture
  • Forming: The brass pieces are shaped into their final forms, which may include bending or molding to create curves and dimensions.
  • Joining: Different components (like the base, shade, and any decorative elements) are joined using soldering techniques or rivets.
6. Finishing Touches
  • Polishing: The surface is polished to enhance shine and remove any rough edges.
  • Coating: Sometimes, a protective lacquer is applied to prevent tarnishing and enhance durability.
7. Electrical Installation
  • Wiring: If the fixture is to be electric, electrical components are carefully installed, including sockets and wiring.
  • Testing: Fixtures are tested for functionality and safety.
8. Final Assembly
  • Assembling Components: All parts are assembled, ensuring everything fits together perfectly.
  • Quality Control: Final inspections are conducted to check for any defects or issues.
9. Market Preparation
  • Packaging: Finished products are carefully packaged for sale, ensuring they are protected during transportation.
  • Showcasing: The products are often displayed in local markets or shops, highlighting their unique craftsmanship.
10. Cultural Significance
  • Throughout this process, artisans incorporate cultural elements, making each piece a reflection of Moroccan heritage and artistry.

Each step involves meticulous attention to detail, with artisans often passing down techniques through generations, ensuring that the craftsmanship remains alive in Fes.

- For general cleaning, use a soft, lint-free cloth.

- For more intensive cleaning, use a copper cleaner that you can find at your local hardware store, it will help remove dirt, tarnish and grease build-up, leaving a shiny, polished finish. Follow the instructions on the bottle.

- If you prefer a brushed finish, lightly sand with a Scotch Brite pad afterwards.

- For a chemical-free alternative, mix a teaspoon of salt with ½ cup of vinegar, then add flour until it forms a paste. Spread it over the brass, let it sit for an hour, then rinse and buff. This method can lighten the colour of the brass.

- To treat surface scratches, use a Scotch Brite pad to buff them, sanding in the direction of the grain. Always wear gloves to avoid fingerprints.
